چکیده

A P system is a natural computing model inspired by information processing in cells and cellular membranes. We show that confluent P systems with active membranes solve in polynomial time exactly the class of problems PSPACE. Consequently, these P systems prove to be equivalent (up to a polynomial time reduction) to the alternating Turing machine or the PRAM computer. Similar results were achieved also with other models of natural computation, such as DNA computing or genetic algorithms. Our result, together with the previous observations, suggests that the class PSPACE provides a tight upper bound on the computational potential of biological information processing models. © 2006 Elsevier Inc. Computational Complexity Aspects in Membrane Computing

Within the framework of membrane systems, distributed parallel computing models inspired by the functioning of the living cell, various computational complexity classes have been defined, which can be compared against the computational complexity classes defined for Turing machines. Here some issues and results concerning computational complexity of membrane systems are discussed. In particular...

Complexity classes for membrane systems

We compare various computational complexity classes defined within the framework of membrane systems, a distributed parallel computing device which is inspired from the functioning of the cell, with usual computational complexity classes for Turing machines. In particular, we focus our attention on the comparison among complexity classes for membrane systems with active membranes (where new mem...

Probabilistically Checkable Debate Systems and Nonapproximability of PSPACE-Hard Functions

We initiate an investigation of probabilistically checkable debate Abstract-1 systems (PCDS), a natural generalization of probabilistically checkable proof systems (PCPS). A PCDS for a language L consists of a probabilistic polynomial-time verifier V and a debate between player 1, who claims that the input x is in L, and player 0, who claims that the input x is not in L. We show that there is a...

Solving a PSPACE-Complete Problem by Recognizing P Systems with Restricted Active Membranes

P systems are parallel molecular computing models based on processing multisets of objects in cell-like membrane structures. Recently, Petr Sosı́k has shown that a semi-uniform family of P systems with active membranes and 2-division is able to solve the PSPACE-complete problem QBF-SAT in linear time; he has also conjectured that the membrane dissolving rules of the (d) type may be omitted, but ...

Generalized Hex and Logical Characterizations of Polynomial Space We Consider a Particular Logical Characterization of the Complexity Class Pspace Using Rst-order Logic, with a Built-in Successor Relation, Extended

We answer a question posed by Makowsky and Pnueli and show that the logic (HEX) FO s ], where HEX is the operator (i.e., uniform sequence of Lindstrr om quantiiers) corresponding to the well-known PSPACE-complete decision problem Generalized Hex, collapses to the fragment HEX 1 FO s ] and, moreover, that this logic has a particular normal form which results in the problem HEX being complete for...
